counselors are health professionals who are trained to help families understand
genetic disorders and to provide information and support to those families.
They may also serve as patient advocates by referring people or families to
local hospitals that can be of help.
Genetic
research is a powerful tool for treating medical conditions, but it is still a
new tool. Many people whose families are affected by genetic disorders don't
understand how it will affect them. Even genetic researchers and doctors don't
really understand how genes cause all genetic disorders. Genetic counselors
work with doctors and families to get the information they need to understand

Education: In order to become a Certified Genetic
Counselor, one must obtain
a Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an ACGC Program. Once all requirements have been met, you may
apply and sit for the Certification Examination.
There are no other pathways through which a person can become a Certified
Genetic Counselor.
