Speech Pathologist

                             Speech Pathologist
Duties and Responsibilities: Speech-language pathologists (sometimes called speech therapists) assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent communication and swallowing disorders in patients. Speech, language, and swallowing disorders result from a variety of causes, such as a stroke, brain injury, hearing loss, developmental delay, a cleft palate, cerebral palsy, or emotional problems. When diagnosing patients, speech-language pathologists typically do the following:

       ·         Communicate with patients to evaluate their levels of speech or language difficulty

      ·         Determine the extent of communication problems by having a patient complete basic reading and vocalizing tasks or by giving standardized tests

      ·         Identify treatment options

       ·         Create and carry out an individualized treatment plan

Salary: $44,380

Education: The standard level of education for speech-language pathologists is a master’s degree. Although master’s programs do not specify a particular undergraduate degree for admission, certain courses must be taken before entering the program. Required courses vary by institution. Graduate programs often include courses in age-specific speech disorders, alternative communication methods, and swallowing disorders. These programs also include supervised clinical practice in addition to coursework.

Sonographer (Ultrasound Technician)

       Sonographer (Ultrasound Technician)
Duties and Responsibilities: However, it is almost impossible to find a job in ultrasound anywhere in the United States at this point. The market is totally saturated everywhere! I've applied to almost 100 positions in the past three months, and I've only had one interview (which was a total joke). So if you need to be able to support yourself, I'd suggest that you look at a different career! The only way I could recommend going into ultrasound is if you don't mind busting your hump for two or more years and then having no job to show for it!

I don't think that the pay at doctors' offices is significantly lower; HOWEVER, jobs at doctors' offices are harder to come by. It's rare to start out at a doctor's office, because most of these jobs are considered to be plum jobs (daytime hours, no call necessary, a more relaxed working environment, etc).

Salary:  $23,000

Education: The pregnancy ultrasound is one of the tasks carried out by the ultrasound technician. It is an imaging test using sound waves in seeing how a baby develops in the womb. It is used in checking the female pelvic organs when a woman is pregnant. In doing the test as you lie down, the technician will place a water-based, clear gel on your pelvis area and belly, after which a hand-held probe will be moved over the area. Through gel, sound waves will be transmitted, bouncing off the structures of the body, including the baby developing, thus creating a picture on the ultrasound machine.

Here is some basic information on ultrasound technician training for those aspiring to be ultrasound technicians. You would start your training by enrolling in a two-year associate’s degree in allied health or ultrasound tech, or you can obtain a certificate from a vocational school. Generally you would take courses in the classroom and get clinical training at a hospital or clinic as a requirement for graduation. You want to choose a school that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs, and that has a strong reputation in your city. You should also consider the cost when choosing a school.
